Short Courses
Short Courses are an adjunct to mentoring, providing focused and individualized training for guild members on more technical topics. Aside from the direct transfer of knowledge, they will foster social connections between new members and highlight the instructors as guild resources. Instructors will be able to share their time and expertise without necessarily accepting the larger commitment that mentoring entails.
We will need instructors who are knowledgeable in a certain topic, and willing to put on a 1-1.5 hour course for up to 4 other guildmates at a time. Each course would ideally be available roughly once a week at some semi-predictable time. Students would normally sign up for a slot at least a day in advance, in order to save the instructor a wasted hour. Flexibility in the scheduling would be negotiable with the instructor.
Sample topics:
- How should I gem my gear?
- How should I enchant my gear?
- How do I play Alterac Valley?
- What is PvP gear?
- How do I use the Auction House?
The format of the course is up to the instructor. It could be an email-based mailing list, an in-game meeting inside an instance, a TeamSpeak/Ventrilo conference, or whatever format is ultimately preferred. Be creative!
A topic could be discussed in-depth in game in a WoW 5-man group, probably with Teamspeak/Ventrilo support. The 5-man group intentioinally limits the size, facilitates text communication, and allows an instance to be used during the course if appropriate. It might also provide a natural segue into a casual instance after the course is finished.
But again, the format is for whatever the instructor thinks works best, considering that some topics may be of practical interest to those who aren't even on our server but still involved in Consensus.
