Paths to Glory
Paths
(From Mori's forum posting...)
I'm going to say that I love the "paths" that Order of Twilight has for its members to grow and move up in the ranks. I also really like the new in game achievements system. Unfortunately if you hate both of those things you may not like this idea, but here it goes anyways.
Have separate paths that lead upward from Stowaway to Gunner to Lieutenant. For each "rank" of that path there would be "achievements" (not in game ones but our own, altho some might overlap). I'd propose to have the "achievements" that earn you points move people up through the ranks, and have those achievements be little and big, wide and varied. When you gain enough points you move up in the ranks.
Here are some proposed paths and examples (I'm not completely sold on all the names btw, so if you have suggestions feel free to make them):
Builder (like ship builder): These are the people who enjoy investing in the guild. While we will all be investing in the guild, this would entail things that specifically grow the guild such as: helping people with alts, helping with the webpage, writing an article, being a mentor, finding a mentor etc. This is the path, along with the looting and craftsman path which I think would appeal to new players the most.
- This title has a particularly cool double-meaning, because it can also apply to the concept of consensus, i.e. a "consensus builder". -Mareyn 05:32, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Financier: Some people (I include myself in this) really aren't big on giant server parties or whatever. But I totally support people that want to do that kind of thing. So, the way I support them is through donations, because I know what they are doing is important, I just don't find it enjoyable myself. Achievements with this path would be like: clean up the guild bank, auction off things for the guild, farm or donate money for server party (or other events), donate items to the guild bank, teach someone how to use auctioneer etc.
Craftsman: Since most everyone does tradeskills, this path can apply to a large part of the guild. Some examples: run a tradeskill night, Cut 25 gems for 25 different guild mates, make 15 bags, fish up one of each kind of fish in northrend, write an article about your tradeskill, lead a tradeskill (like SCalchemy) etc.
Pillager: PvP related things, such as scheduling a premade battleground for the guild, helping someone with their PvP skills by doing battlegrounds with them (canton and Louki did this with me when I first started pvping and it was so helpful since I had no idea what RH or IBT meant in Alterac Valley), organize a raid against the faction leaders, etc.
Looter: Raiding and instancing related things, some examples would be: schedule a 5-man instance event, write an article for your class, write a guide to a boss (especially helpful in wrath!), post on a forum such as Elitist Jerks with some theorycrafting, be a part of a 25-man raid group, invite someone who has never raided into that empty slot in your 25-man raid group and help them learn how to raiding, do a 5-man instance with 4 people you don't usually run with, etc.
- I like this path, but think that looting is the least of what this person does. Perhaps Strategist or something similar. Since even playing in a party/raid requires strategy, and certainly writing guides, etc. Does. Eradorn 01:42, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- I guess the reason I named it looter was to tie it in thematically as the "opposite" of pillager. I didn't mean it to imply that loot is all we care about. Although strategist can also tie in with the subtle nautical theme we seem to have going on. Maybe we could name it "Plunderer" instead... I guess you can plunder a dungeon... --Mori 18:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Diplomat (man I really wanted a better title than this but couldn't think of one): Run in an SGA run, post on the guild relations forum, schedule an event with another guild, etc.
- Better title?! Diplomat is like the coolest title evar!!!! -Mareyn 05:32, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with Diplomat is that it is one of the titles from Achievements. Maybe Envoy? Rheyna 16:19, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, good point. I like Envoy. Emissary might work too. -Mareyn 06:20, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
People would be able to pursue as many paths as they want to, and their achievements could be displayed on their profile page. People would gain titles as they moved up the ranks (maybe specific to each path, so like for craftsman it could be like: Apprentice, Master, Tycoon or something... man my brain is uncreative today), and I think it would be great to see people with titles such as Builder-pillager, or Pillager-Diplomat etc.
- I actually really like the title "Tycoon", but it sounds like something on the Financier path rather than the craftsman path, perhaps. -Mareyn 05:32, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
All of the points btw would be on the honor system so that maybe we could have a checklist or something and people just check off the box when they've done that, and the system calculates points each week or something.
