There's a couple things we've noted about guild names that we like:

  • Good ones tend to imply some sort of theme, e.g. "Sleeper Cartel" evokes the idea of a clandestine organization, which makes it alot easier to come up with rank names, website design, events, etc.
  • It's nice when the name easily implies what guildies are called, e.g. Sleeper Cartel -> Sleepers.

Thoughts on the name <Proudmoore Privateers> from Mareyn:

so for one thing, i tend to like the horde more than the alliance lore-wise. thrall is basically my hero. but then i realized that i totally forgot about jaina proudmoore, who allied with thrall to defeat the burning legion and wants to bust peaceful relations with the horde. which i am for not just from a lore perspective but also a gaming perspective, because i really hate that i can't even talk to hordies. aside from all that, though, jaina is a strong character who represents the alliance at its best, so i thought it would be cool to have the guild somehow be in the spirit of her mission. we can probably extrapolate that ms. proudmoore would rule as a facilitator-type-person rather than a ruler-type-person too, she just seems to have that sort of vibe about her, so that could even support the guild's management style.
anyhow, so i was trying to think of names that either have the word 'proudmoore', 'jaina', or 'theramore' in them. The best one I think I've come up with so far is <Proudmoore Privateers>. Some reasons why I like it:
  1. It alliterates!
  2. It's kind of goofy but dignified at the same time.
  3. The word 'privateer' smacks of at least a bit of mischief, while 'proudmoore' balances it out with some good old-fashioned compassion and diplomacy.
  4. Thematically it could be very piratey, which is always fun.
  5. There are only 3 guilds in all the realms with the word 'privateer' in them (and they're all just called 'Privateer') so it's fairly unique.
  6. It establishes 'privateer' as a word for what we'd call our guildies.

<The Angry Penguins> - The Angry Penguins' was a modernist literary and artistic movement that sought to shake up the entrenched art establishment of Australia in the 1940s. Also see the Wikipedia article and ernmalley.com.

  1. Interesting history.
  2. An unusual and off-the-wall name.
  3. Could lead to an cool (hehe...cool) theme, especially for moving into Northrend.
  4. Ranks could be playful.
  5. Sorry, nothing to do with Jaina unless she has a fascination for penguins we don't know about :D
  6. New pet in Northrend - Chilly the Penguin
  7. Possible name for a newsletter or website - "Tip of the Iceberg"?
  8. Angrypenguins.net and .org are available (not .com)
  9. Snow suggested that we could mail all new members a tuxedo outfit.
  10. Angry Penguins is currently a 200-member casual guild on the Kargath server, with a website.

Notes on <Consensus>:

  1. consens.us is available (parked for free by GoDaddy.com, a hosting provider).
  2. Guildies could be called sensies or Sensates.
  3. According to the Armory, there's only one other guild called Consensus, and it has 1 member.
  4. Also see this forum thread on the name.

Notes on <The Prank Hatchery>:

  1. prankhatchery.com is available.
  2. Guildies could be called "hatchers" or "pranksters".

Notes on <Synesthesia>:

  1. "is a neurologically-based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway."
  2. In other words, numbers have a colour, voices have scenery, foods sound different from others, etc
  3. has a variety of spellings: synæsthesia or synaesthesia
  4. synethesia.org is available
  5. play off of "senses" and perception
  6. guildies could be called "synners"
  7. Wikipedia page on Synesthesia for more information
  8. Lucilde looked up the name Synesthesia on Armory for guilds and with the spelling Synesthesia there are 7 guilds named that and with the spelling Synaesthesia there are none.

Notes on <Consense> or <Consensors>:

  1. Kind of a multi-way pun tying above ideas together.
  2. Derived from Consensus
  3. Also pun on "con" or trickery
  4. Consense sounds like "nonsense" or silliness
  5. Also sense or sensor related to sensing/synesthesia
  6. Guild could be Consense, guildies could be Consensors
